At UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine
Medical School Unveils Expanded Research, Services at Science Center

1/11/05—When the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-School of Osteopathic Medicine formally dedicates the new wing of its Science Center on Thursday, January 13 at 4 p.m., it will be celebrating more than new bricks and beakers.

The Science Center's new three-story wing will add 20,000 square feet of available research laboratory space on the Stratford campus, a increase of more than 25 percent.  It will also fuel growth for the medical school's science education programs.

"Our campus is home to one of the most important and significant research facilities in South Jersey," said Dr. R. Michael Gallagher, dean of the medical school.  "The federal government and organizations like NASA, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society have invested more than $34 million dollars in our researchers who are seeking to solve the mysteries of aging, heart disease, cancer and a host of other conditions.  For 20 consecutive years, our school has been among the top three osteopathic medical schools in the country for federally funded research."

"Right now, UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine is the only academic institution in the southern half of the state offering a doctoral program in biomedical sciences," said Dr. Carl Hock, assistant dean for research at the school.  "We also offer our students a combined medical and Ph.D. program and recently launched a masters of biomedical science degree program that can be earned part-time through evening classes that are taught by our researchers."

Immediately following the building dedication program, the UMDNJ-School of Osteopathic Medicine will host a reception to welcome Dr. William T. McAllister, the new chairman of the Department of Cell Biology.  Dr. McAllister comes to UMDNJ from the SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn where he served as chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology since 1986.  Dr. McAllister is the author of more than 100 scientific publications and has participated in eight patents concerning his work in genetic research.

The UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine is one of three medical schools of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  UMDNJ comprises New Jersey's only medical schools, the state's only dental school, a nursing school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health related professions and a school of public health on campuses in Newark, Piscataway/New Brunswick, Camden, Stratford, and Scotch Plains.  UMDNJ also operates University Hospital, Newark, and University Behavioral HealthCare.  It is affiliated with more than 200 healthcare and educational institutions throughout the state.
