UMDNJ's New Brunswick Health Center Celebrates 50,000th
Patient Visit
Jair Lopez will be the center of attention at the Eric B. Chandler
Health Center on Tuesday, Oct. 7, because he will be the 50,000th
patient when his mother registers him for his first newborn examination.
A celebration will be held in Jair's honor from 8 a.m. to 9:30
a.m. at the Eric B. Chandler Health Center, 277 George Street,
New Brunswick.
When Jair, who weighed in on Sept. 20th at seven
pounds and 11 ounces, and his mother, Eva Lopez, arrive at the
health center they will be greeted by a nurse, a social worker
and a nutritionist. These health professionals will present them
with balloons and a gift basket filled with items for mother and
son, such as baby lotion, bibs, wash cloths, perfume, nail polish
and a coffee mug.
The Eric B. Chandler Health Center, New Brunswick's only federally
qualified community health center, is part of the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)-Robert Wood Johnson
Medical School.
According to Grace Ouma, director of social services at the
Eric B. Chandler Health Center, "This occasion represents a milestone
in patient care and health services for New Brunswick's medically
underserved residents."
Following the celebration and patient registration, a registered
pediatric nurse at the Eric B. Chandler Health Center, will begin
Jair's first examination, called a Nurse Newborn Visit. She will
monitor Jair's vital signs, listen to his lungs, and examine him
from head to toe during the visit, which is scheduled for newborns
one to two weeks after birth.
Next, a social worker will observe the mother-baby interaction
and monitor the mother for symptoms of post-partum depression.
Then a nutritionist will provide suggestions for healthy meals
and describe the impact that a healthy lifestyle can have on preventive
health for mother and child.
Members of the health care team at the Eric B. Chandler Health
Center assist mothers of newborns by providing them with supplies
like diapers and formula. The staff also encourages and assists
parents in the registration process for the Women, Infant and
Children (WIC) program. Referrals are made to an on-site representative
who can register parents and children for Medicaid.
The Eric B. Chandler Health Center is a comprehensive, family-oriented
community health center that is dedicated to the provision of
high quality ambulatory care services such as: prenatal care,
family planning, internal medicine, pediatrics, podiatry, dental
services, New Jersey Family Care registration, nutrition, geriatrics,
social services, immunizations, HIV Counseling & Testing,
and HIV/AIDS treatment.
The center participates in the Health Resources and Services
Administration's (HRSA) national 'care model' initiative aimed
at improving outcomes for patients with chronic medical illness.
The Eric B. Chandler Health Center was opened by the UMDNJ-Robert
Wood Johnson Medical School in 1988 and named in memory of Eric
B. Chandler, Ed.D., an active and respected community leader and
former director of the Urban League of Greater New Brunswick.
The center provides medical residents, students and other health
professionals from the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
with an opportunity to work with physicians, nurse practitioners,
social workers, health educators and nutritionists.
Dr. Denise V. Rodgers, associate dean of community health at
the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said, "We teach
them about the importance of understanding the psychosocial aspects
of illness, cultural diversity, and the principles of preventive
health care services."
Originally designed to provide school children with primary
health services, the center now serves men, women and children.
The Eric B. Chandler Health Center is open: Monday, Wednesday
and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday from
