UMDNJ and NJCRI Host Free Event To Fight HIV/AIDS in the Black Communit

Held in observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Health professionals at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and the North Jersey Community Research Initiative (NJCRI) invite the public to a free event observing National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The event will be held on Feb. 6, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, 185 South Orange Ave., GelleneRoom, Newark.

Organizers in Newark have planned a family-orientated event where individuals can enjoy a display of artifacts, African masks, tapestry, sculptures, and paintings compliments of The Newark Museum and local artists. In addition to refreshments, live entertainment will be provided: poetry and recording artists. Newark Councilman-at-Large Luis Quintana will deliver a proclamation on behalf of the City of Newark followed by a candlelight vigil.

This event will take place one day before the official 3rd Annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The Community Capacity Building Coalition established the national event which is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Representatives from over 150 community-based organizations in more than 60 cities nationwide, including Newark, will promote safe sexual practices while urging black Americans to get tested and become involved in the fight against AIDS.
