UMDNJ Sponsors Latino Medical Conference for
Health Professionals who Treat the Latino Population
This conference is being held in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month
Physicians, nurses and other health professionals will attend a two-day Latino Medical Conference at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) on Friday, Sept. 27, and Saturday, Sept. 28.
The conference, "Latino Medical Conference 2002: Our Health, Our Culture," will be held at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School, 185 South Orange Avenue in Newark. Designed for New Jersey health providers who treat Latino patients, the conference is sponsored by the Center for Continuing Education and Outreach Education at UMDNJ.
The purpose of the conference is to provide health professionals with essential information that will help improve health outcomes in the Latino community. The conference will highlight medical conditions that disproportionately affect the Latino community such as mental health, HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes and obesity. Workshop facilitators will also provide techniques for improving communication between health providers and patients.
Dr. Joseph Betancourt, director for the Multicultural Educaltion and Multicultural Affairs Office at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, will present a Grand Rounds lecture entitled, "The Institute of Medicine Report on Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health Care: Findings, Recommendations and Implications for Latino Health."
Dr. Susana R. Morales, director of the Center for Multicultural and Minority Health and an administrator at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University-New York Presbyterian Hospital, will deliver a keynote address on the second day of the conference.
Funding for this program has been provided by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services's Division of AIDS Prevention and Control and several pharmaceutical companies.
