University Information

Founded in 1970 by the State Legislature as the College of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey, granted University status in 1981.

4 Main Campuses: Newark, Stratford, Camden, Piscataway/New Brunswick; branch campus: Scotch Plains.

8 Schools, plus Newark's University Hospital and University Behavioral HealthCare.

185 acres, 59 buildings, 5.8 million square feet.

$535 million building expansion program started in 2000 to add 1.7 million square feet to academic and research facilities.

Largest institution of its kind in the nation.

FY 04 total external awards: $301.8 million. 55% provided by federal agencies.

UMDNJ has one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation. Ranked 1st in number of Asians receiving medical degrees, 4th in number of African Americans, 5th in number of Hispanics, according to Black Issues in Higher Education (July 2003). Ranked 3rd in Osteopathic Medicine degrees awarded to Hispanics, according to Hispanic Outlook (May 2004).

Private Giving to the Foundation of UMDNJ

Gifts and pledges in the fiscal year ending June 2004 totaled $21.6 million.

Assets grew from $160 million in 2003 to $180 million in 2004.

Investments grew from $136 million in 2003 to $161 million in 2004.

An endowed scholarship program announced during the last quarter of fiscal year 2003 has received $3,225,000.

Remained in the top 10th percentile of the National Association of College and University Business Officers Return on Investment Study.

In fiscal year 2004, 2,291 alumni contributed nearly $522,000 to the Foundation of UMDNJ through their alumni associations.

Healthcare System

2 million patient visits to UMDNJ healthcare facilities and faculty practice offices last year.

Owns and operates UMDNJ-University Hospital in Newark. 504 beds, staffed by 300 full-time physicians, 19,000 admissions, 2,700 births, 270,000 outpatient visits annually.

Affiliations with more than 70 New Jersey hospitals and/or health systems.

Owns and operates University Behavioral HealthCare (UBHC), mental health and addiction services network.

More than 10 statewide centers of excellence including The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the first and only NIH designated comprehensive cancer center in the state.
