The Association of African Biomedical Scientist (AABS) Meets at EB2011 DATE: April 11, 2011 VENUE: Walter E. Boyaka is elected as Chairman of Minority Affairs Committee of the American Association of Immunologists Dr. Prosper N. Boyaka, has been elected to chair the Minority Affairs Committee of the American Association of Immunologists until 2012. Prosper N. Boyaka, M.S., Ph.D., is a Professor of Veterinary Sciences and Professor of Pulmonary/Critical Care at the Ohio State University. Dr. Boyaka obtained his M.S. in Biochemistry, and Ph.D. in Immunotoxicology from Université Denis Diderot - Paris 7. His research focuses on Mucosal Immunology and Food Allergy. Dr. Boyaka is a member of AABS. The Board of Trustees and Members of AABS wish to congratulate Dr. Boyaka for this honor. We wish him success during his tenure in this important position. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Barack Abonyo's Asthma Research Receives Recognition Groundbreaking research conducted by a team led by Dr. Barack Abonyo on Asthma eradication has been featured in the International Innovation magazine by Research media LTD. Dr. Abonyo’s work has unraveled critical chemokine cascades that play a vital role in Asthma induction. His team proposed biological means of repairing airway epithelium damage caused by lung inflammation. A summary of Dr. Abonyo’s work has been reported in University of Florida newsletter, a copy of which is attached. He is an Associate Professor of Pharmacology at College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Florida A & M University. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Texas Southern University has named Dr. Adebayo Oyekan interim Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Research The Office of the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research of Texas Southern University has announced the appointment of Adebayo Oyekan, D.V.M., Ph.D. as interim Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Research, effective March 1, 2010. Dr. Oyekan is a Professor of Pharmacology in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and currently serves as Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Diseases; a position that he has held since 1999. Since joining TSU in 1999, he has received research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), totaling $6.3 million. Dr. Oyekan has been recognized for his research abilities with the following honors: Fogarty International fellowship, American Heart Association fellowship, Rhodes Trust fellowship, American Heart Association Established Investigator Award, NIH Research Scientist Award and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Research Scientist Award. Dr. Oyekan is one of the founding Board members of AABS, Inc, and has continued to serve on the Board. He is also the Executive Secretary of AABS, Inc.
