The Neurological Institute of New Jersey (NINJ) is a comprehensive center of
excellence within the New Jersey Medical School at the University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). The three-fold mission of NINJ physicians,
healthcare professionals and scientists related to neurological diseases is:
- To be international leaders in providing both standard and unique clinical
services
- To conduct cutting edge clinical and basic research
- To provide exceptional educational and training opportunities for
clinicians and scientists.
Peter Carmel, M.D., D. Med.Sc. (Chair, Department of Neurological Surgery)
and Patrick Pullicino, M.D., Ph.D. Chair, Department of Neurology and
Neuroscience) are the Medical Co-Directors of the NINJ, and Nicholas M. Ponzio,
Ph.D. is its Associate Director and Chief Operating Officer. Along with the
members of the NINJ Board of Directors, these individuals have operational
responsibility for the Institute.
The research activities and clinical practices at NINJ cut across traditional
departmental lines and focus on specific disease processes. The NINJ brings
together world-class clinical scholars, physicians and basic scientists in
specialty areas that include, multiple sclerosis, adult and pediatric brain
tumors, autism, epilepsy, spinal degeneration, stroke, Lyme disease,
neuromuscular diseases, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, and peripheral
nerve disorders, to name a few.
The NINJ Clinical Facility, occupies the entire top floor of the Doctors
Office Center located on the Newark Campus of UMDNJ. This state-of-the-art
facility is both attractive and comfortable for patients seeking the services of
NINJ physicians for diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases. The 20,000
square feet of space within this new facility houses patient-friendly reception
and waiting areas, as well as 20 examination/treatment rooms that include
several specialty rooms, and areas specifically designed for pediatric patients
and their families.
NINJ is the premier facility for neuroscience-related research in New Jersey
with respect to expertise, diversity and funding, the number and quality of
scientific articles published, as well as available laboratory resources.
Collaboration of NINJ faculty members at UMDNJ with pharmaceutical and
biotechnology companies has resulted in clinical trials and joint research
projects, as well as beta-development for several biotech firms. The vibrant
research and clinical environment that exists at NINJ provides an ideal setting
to train tomorrow's neuroscientists, neurologists and neurosurgeons.
NINJ's educational and training programs provide the hub for educating
physicians and researchers in New Jersey and work in concert with New Jersey
Medical School, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the UMDNJ Graduate School of
Biomedical Sciences, and Rutgers University Newark. In close association with
the Kessler Institute, NINJ has developed the National Model Spinal Injury
Program and the Model Traumatic Brain Injury Program. NINJ researchers are
responsible for landmark discoveries in multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain
injury rehabilitation, chronic fatigue syndrome, neuro-rehabilitation and
neurosurgical developments including new and advanced intraoperative MRI
technologies. NINJ is proud to be part of the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey, our nation's largest health sciences university.
